Protect Personal and Workplace Information When Using AI

Pause before pasting

A document can contain more private information than you notice at first. Résumés, spreadsheets and email threads may reveal addresses, personal identifiers, pay, customer records or internal business plans.

Use fictional examples while learning. Replace names and details with generic descriptions, but remember that removing a name does not necessarily make a document safe. A unique situation can still identify someone.

Use an approved process

At work, ask which tools and uses are authorized. Do not assume that a paid account or a familiar product name permits uploading confidential information. Review the applicable account settings and organizational policy.

If you accidentally share restricted information, follow the organization’s incident-reporting process promptly. For your own job search, keep identity and banking documents out of practice prompts. Provide sensitive information only through a verified, appropriate application or onboarding process.
