A New Beginning in a New Place

Relocation Opportunities

Some communities offer financial help to people who move there.

Many incentive programs require an existing full-time remote job or qualifying self-employment. Others require you to secure a local job. Most require a move from outside the area. Amounts, eligibility and application windows change; confirm details with the program before making moving plans.

Status last reviewed: October 12, 2026. An application link does not guarantee funding, acceptance or immediate availability. Cash amounts and package values are different.

Ascend WV, West Virginia

Up to $12,000 paid over 24 months, plus an outdoor recreation package and coworking support. Two years of residency are required for the full incentive.

Listing offers applications · Remote workers

Move to Eastern Kentucky

The current listing advertises $5,000 cash and a possible $2,500 partner bonus for a qualifying local education or healthcare job. It requires full-time remote work or qualifying self-employment, at least $70,000 annual income, residence outside Kentucky and relocation within six months. Additional county-specific benefits have separate conditions.

Listing offers applications · Remote and local-job tracks

Make Detroit Home, Michigan

The job-seeker track lists $1,000 relocation or financial support. Applicants must secure new full-time employment earning at least $50,000 annually in Michigan, currently live outside Detroit and relocate to the city within six months. A separate remote-worker track has its own requirements.

Listing offers applications · In-person jobs

Jacksonville Region, Illinois

The in-person jobs program lists $5,000 cash for relocation. Its eligibility section specifies at least $70,000 annual income, residence at least 70 miles outside the region and a move to Scott or Morgan County within six months. Confirm qualifying employment and documentation with the program before committing.

Listings offer applications · Separate local and remote tracks

Mercer County, Missouri

The local-jobs track lists a $5,000 cash stipend. It requires at least $20,000 in current employment and new full-time work earning at least $50,000 annually in or near Mercer County; remote, gig and self-employed workers do not qualify for this track. The separate remote-worker listing currently also shows an application route. Confirm funding and payment timing directly; NJS has not verified reports of payment delays.

Listing offers applications · Primarily noncash benefits

Indy Region, Indiana

The current regional listing offers coworking passes, memberships, experiences and a moving-service discount. Its advertised package value is not a cash grant. It requires qualifying remote work or self-employment, at least $50,000 annual income, residence outside Indiana and relocation to an eligible county within six months. The older $2,500 cash and free-parking description is not shown in this listing.

Employer participation required · Confirm terms directly

Choose Topeka, Kansas

Current program guidance requires qualifying employment with a Shawnee County employer. Incentive amounts and payment timing depend on the employer and position; funding is not guaranteed. Older remote-worker pages describe different terms, so NJS does not present those amounts as a current offer. Ask about the employer-match and transitioning-military options before relocating.

Programs with Limited Availability

Richmond & Wayne County, Indiana

Both remote and job-seeker listings are marked waitlisted. The job-seeker page lists $5,000 cash, but applicants must meet its current-employment requirement and secure full-time Wayne County work paying at least $55,000 annually. Do not assume immediate availability.

Mattoon, Illinois

The program listing is marked Application Closed. Its historical package should not be treated as currently available. Check the sponsor’s listing for reopening information.

Moving for Work Without a Remote Job

You still have options. Moving usually requires money up front, and some incentives are paid only after arrival or employment milestones. Plan around confirmed funds and a realistic job search.

  1. Explore Local-Job Programs

Use the Detroit, Mercer County, Jacksonville and Choose Topeka links above. Richmond’s job-seeker track exists but is waitlisted. These tracks still have income, employment and residency requirements; being unemployed alone does not establish eligibility.

  2. Look for Employer Relocation Assistance

Ask whether a job offer includes relocation support before accepting. Request written details about covered expenses, payment timing and repayment obligations. Some federal announcements specify whether relocation expenses are authorized.

  3. Ask Your American Job Center

Ask about available job referrals, training and supportive services, and whether any eligible assistance can address job-search or moving-related expenses. Availability varies; American Job Centers do not universally fund relocation.

  4. Veterans & Military Families

Ascend Heroes includes remote-work and local-employment paths for eligible veterans; qualified job seekers may receive conditional acceptance and job-placement assistance. Choose Topeka also provides information for transitioning military members. Check each program’s specific conditions.

  5. Plan Before You Commit

    • Compare wages, housing costs, transportation and job openings.
    • Secure a job or arrange interviews before moving where possible.
    • Confirm the payment schedule, tax implications and required length of residency.
    • Verify unexpected requests for money directly with the program. MakeMyMove states its service is free to movers.
