A Closer Look
In western North Dakota, Theodore Roosevelt National Park brings the shapes and colors of the badlands into view: folded hills, exposed rock and bends of the Little Missouri River. Cottonwood groves along the water offer a different perspective from the open overlooks above. Trails range from short paved walks to longer wilderness routes, so an outing can suit different interests and abilities. Bison inhabit this landscape; watching from a respectful distance is part of appreciating a place where the animals set their own course. An evening view can make the changing contours and light as memorable as the walk itself.
Knife River Indian Villages National Historic Site adds human history to a river landscape. Earthlodge communities farmed, hunted and traded here, and interpretation of village life helps visitors see the region as a longstanding center of Indigenous settlement and exchange. The reconstructed earthlodge, garden and village sites invite a slower visit, with time to consider how people used the land and maintained connections across it. Together, these public places offer two ways into North Dakota: looking closely at a living prairie ecosystem and learning about communities whose histories remain essential to understanding the state. They can make an exploratory trip more meaningful as you consider where you might work and live.

Free Local Job & Training Help — American Job Centers
American Job Centers can help you find local openings, connect with employers, prepare for interviews and explore training assistance. Basic employment help is free. Some training and additional services require eligibility approval and available funding. Services vary by center, and employment is not guaranteed.
Enter your city or ZIP code in the official finder. Contact the center to confirm services and appointment requirements.
Ask for more than résumé help:
“Which employers are hiring near my city? Can you refer me to suitable openings? Are hiring events, paid training or on-the-job training available?”
What is WIOA, and who pays for this help?
WIOA means Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act. It is a federal law supporting employment and training services nationwide, not an agency or a job board. American Job Centers bring together public workforce programs and partner services. Local names vary; in California they are called America’s Job Centers of California.
Centers can provide job listings, employer referrals, placement assistance, hiring events, skills assessments and career counseling. Eligible applicants may also receive approved training or other support. Ask your local center which services it provides; a referral does not guarantee an interview or a job.
Federal funding is allocated to states and local workforce areas, alongside other partner-program funding. Standard public job-search and referral services are free to job seekers and employers; employers do not pay a placement commission for these referrals. These are public workforce services rather than a commercial recruiting agency.
You can ask for basic job-search help without assuming you qualify for every WIOA-funded service. Staff determine eligibility for programs with additional requirements.
Special Resources for North Dakota Residents Seeking Employment
Start with a local workforce team. Ask about training eligibility, accommodations, veteran priority, youth services, re-entry and support after prolonged unemployment.
Plan period & status: PY 2024–2027 (July 2024–June 2028). The state publishes a 2026–2027 Unified State Plan modification and its public-comment record. A separate federal approval determination for this modification was not confirmed.
Industries & Occupations
The modification addresses workforce needs in healthcare, energy, education and hospitality. Compare local job requirements with the statewide occupation data; education and healthcare needs include licensed roles.
Skills & Credentials
Explore employer-linked training and registered apprenticeship. Teacher apprenticeships offer a pathway for eligible paraprofessionals; each sponsor sets recruitment and credential requirements.
Help for Your Situation
Ask about veterans’ priority of service, disability employment support, youth training and coordinated referrals. Describe transportation, childcare, language or re-entry needs during your assessment.
Digital & Emerging Skills
The plan discusses digital equity and digital-skilling pilots, alongside proposed AI business solutions. These planning ideas do not establish an open AI course for every applicant.
Regional Differences
North Dakota has one statewide local workforce area. Fargo and Grand Forks technology and healthcare, western energy activity and rural agriculture create different occupational and travel needs.
Where to Begin
Contact a Job Service workforce center and search ND Workforce Connection. Ask staff to connect an individual career plan with eligible training and local supportive services.
