Background Work Beyond Los Angeles — Part 2: Platforms, Registration & Submissions
Build an accurate profile and distinguish free registration, paid platform access and an actual booking.

Choose the Platform for Your Purpose
National casting platforms can help you discover roles in several markets. Backstage, Casting Networks and Project Casting offer casting-related services with differing access and membership terms. Central Casting provides its own location-based signup and background-casting process. They are not interchangeable routes.
Use NJS Film & Entertainment to reach the current provider pages and compare their stated services. Choose U.S. locations and roles that fit your availability. A platform may include international projects, principal acting, modeling or crew work alongside background calls. Read the category instead of assuming every result is an extras job.
Keep the Profile Accurate
Use current photos and truthful information about your location, availability and skills. Follow the provider’s instructions for measurements, work eligibility and any required materials. Do not invent credits, special skills or union status to fit a notice.
Share sensitive onboarding documents only through a verified provider or employer process. A request can be legitimate at the proper stage, but a form arriving through an unfamiliar message deserves independent checking. Find the organization’s website and contact information yourself before responding.
Separate Membership From Employment
The statement that all legitimate platforms are free is too broad. Some commercial platforms have paid subscriptions, application features or other services. A charge for those services is different from a person demanding payment to guarantee a role or release supposed wages.
Compare price, renewal, cancellation, refund terms and free alternatives before joining. Ask what access you are purchasing. A subscription does not guarantee that a suitable call exists, that your application will be selected or that you will earn enough to recover the cost.
Follow the Particular Submission Instructions
Read the filming dates, location, compensation, role description and requested information. Use the application channel named on the independently verified provider site. Regional casting companies may have separate instructions for database registration and a particular project.
After you register or submit, genuine casting staff may contact you by email or text. An availability check is not necessarily a final booking. Verify the sender, project and details when something is unexpected, and keep your status clear: submitted, availability requested, booked or released.
Prepare for a Confirmed Booking
Background roles may be selected from photos and profiles without a traditional audition. The absence of an audition alone does not prove fraud. What matters is whether the production, contact, work arrangement and onboarding process can be independently verified.
For a confirmed booking, clarify the reporting location, dates, pay and communication process for changes. Ask questions before making travel plans. Continue with Part 3 for verification checks, and use the NJS industry guide to revisit provider instructions when needed.
